Francesco Hayez (February 10, 1791—December 21, 1881) was born into a relatively poor family in Venice, Italy. His father was of French origin while his mother was from Murano. The child Hayez, the youngest of five sons, was brought up by his mother’s sister, who had married to a well-off shipowner and collector of art. From childhood he showed a predisposition for drawing, so his uncle apprenticed him to an art restor. Later, he became a student of the painter Francesco Maggiotto with whom he continued his studies of painting for three years. He studied sketching and oil painting from Francesco Maggiotto, while he avided reading historical stories, mythological figures.
In 1805, Hayez won the first prize in the Venice Academy of life drawing works, at the same time, several small principalities of Veneto region in Italy Kingdom were combined. He was admitted to painting course of the New Academy of Fine Art in 1806, where he studied under Teodoro Matteini and began creating historical theme paintings. In 1813, he went his first fine art to Venice Academy, “Rinaldo e Armida”. He remained in Rome until 1814, then moed to Naples where he was commissioned to paint a major work depicting Ulysses at the court of Alcinous. In 1817, Hayez married with a Roman girl and received creative oil painting “Ezechia compassion”task. At the same year, Hayez’s portrait painting creation “Ritrotto della famiglia Cicognara:con il busto colossale di Antonio Canova”, was the first site of explosion in his fame and booking amount.
Fancesco Hayez lived long and was prolific. His output spanned both historic paintings, including those that would have appealed to the patriotic sensibility of the patrons. One of his favorite themes was a semi-clothed female. Often they were, like his Odalisque, evocative of oriental themes, which had been a favorite topic of Romantic painter. Among his works, Hayez’s painting The Kiss was considered among his best work by contemporaries, and has only gained in esteem since then. Assessment of the career of Hayez is complicated by the fact that he often did not sign or date his works. Often the date indicated from the evidence was that at which the work was acquired or sold, not of its creation, or even with no variation. His early works showed the influence of his later work participated in the Classical revival.
